Guide to Guest Posts on GetOutside

Do you have a favourite route, activity or place that you’d like to share with other lovers of the British outdoors?

We are always looking for more inspirational ideas, so if there is something you would like to write about we can publish it on #GetOutside for the world to read.

Guidelines

  • It’s outdoors! Whether it’s an activity, gear or route, we are all about encouraging people to GetOutside.
  • It’s in Britain! While walking up the Himalayas is awesome, we want to showcase the best of Britain for locals and visitors alike.
  • It’s inspiring! Family friendly or extreme adventures, key safety tips or getting started in a new sport – write to spark the readers’ interest. This probably means it’s an activity you’re actively involved in and have a good level of knowledge on.

There are a couple of different formats.

Standard posts

Standard posts can be on any topic and are the most flexible format. We generally ask for a minimum of around 800 words, but with no maximum. The article can be on a single subject, a series of related sections, list-style or even an infographic. They include a small bio and a photo of the author.

Adventure posts

Adventure posts are based around a specific route. As well as a description of the route and some photos to illustrate it, we need either a copy of the route; a shared route on OS Maps, a GPX file or an accurate route drawn on one a paper map. We also ask for additional details such as difficulty and access to parking. It will include a small bio and a photo of the author.

Images

An image is worth a thousand words, so we always like to use some great images to accompany the writing. We can often find images from our existing library, but we prefer to use ones from the authors.

  • Images should be your copyright (taken by you) or where you have full permission to use them for any purpose. Images you have found on other websites can’t be used unless you have obtained permission in writing, unless they are open source.
  • You are granting us your permission (licence) to use the images on GetOutside to illustrate your article. We may also use them on social media to promote your article.
  • If a person is the main subject of the photo, ensure you have their permission for it to be used.
  • Send pictures in high resolution (at least 1200px wide) and we will crop and resize to fit. Don’t embed them into Word documents as this reduces the image quality significantly.
  • If there’s a caption or copyright line you’d like for any of the images, please let us know.
  • Please ensure you send us a picture of yourself along with a one or two sentence biography.
