North West

Rydal Cave
Sat between Ambleside and Grasmere, Rydal is home to the extensively photographed Rydal Cave, a manmade former quarry. #GetOutside Champion Rory Southworth takes us on a leisurely 6.2km route.

Ogden Reservoir to Windy Hill
Let’s face it, 2020 was a horrible year, with many people stuck inside and unable to see friends, family, and loved ones. However, many of us found solace in the outdoors, something that we usually took for granted suddenly became the highlight of the day. Reconnecting with nature and our local areas has helped us both mentally and physically and allowed us to appreciate a slower pace of life.

Mountain Biking around Claife Heights
The Lake District is a hub for adventure, whether you’re looking for multi-day hikes or just escaping for a few hours. It's also home to some amazing gravel tracks and quiet lanes that are perfect for getting out on the mountain bike.

Hutton Roof Crags
Hutton Roof Crags is a lesser walked area in Cumbria. Rory Southworth takes us through a remarkable hillside littered with limestone pavement.

The very best of the Langdale Pikes
James Forrest explores the very best of the Langdale Pikes in a long – but glorious – day of hiking.

The Howgill Fells
Drive along the M6 motorway between Carlisle and Lancaster and a magnificent mountain range will rise before you. Fells such as Great Gable, Helvellyn, The Langdale Pikes and Scafell Pike will entice you in with their rugged charm. Not far from the Lake District and visible from the same stretch of Motorway lies a small mound of hills. Names such as Winder, Brant Fell and The Calf do not capture the imagination like their loftier neighbours. Having said that, The Howgill Fells are beautiful in their own right and well worth a visit.

Old Man of Coniston and Levers Water Circular
The Old Man of Coniston is part of the Furness Fells in the Lake District standing 803m high, and lies to the west of the village of Coniston, and Coniston Water. OS GetOutside Champion duo, TwoTravlrs, take us across this underrated beauty of the Lakes.

Jack’s Rake Scramble
Jack’s Rake is a brilliant grade 1 scramble in the stunning Langdale area of the Lake District, with potential for something more for those looking for a bit of a bigger thrill or an extended adventure.

Ennerdale Forest walk
The English Lake District is blessed with some of the finest scenery in the United Kingdom. Instead of going for the peaks, for this walk we've chosen to explore the Ennerdale Valley

Trig bagging on the Isle of Man
The North Barrule trig pillar is on the Isle of Man and is at the end of a lovely ridge with many false summits.

Dodging floods on a Derwent Water circular walk
Derwent Water is one of the most picturesque areas of the Lake District, but at the time I went I had to carefully plan a route to avoid recent flood damage.

A High Raise round from Grasmere
A walk from Grasmere up to the High Raise summit and trig pillar, the highest point in the Central Fells with commanding views of the whole Lake District.

A coastal loop of Ulverston with stunning views
This walk has a little of everything, from country lanes, beautiful views across Morecambe Bay, and a gradual climb to Brigg Common for a 360 degree view of the sea and the Lake District.
