New Forest National Park on the south coast was established in 2005. Despite the name, around half the area consists of open heaths and grassland, the rest covered with woodlands. It’s best known for the New Forest ponies, which roam freely in the area, along with cattle and donkeys.
As the area is fairly flat, it is ideal for cycling, and despite the relatively high human population has a wide range of wildlife, especially birds. There are a number of villages within the park, many of which make ideal destinations for day trips. Visit Lymington for a quaint but vibrant high street with a choice of destinations for afternoon tea.
