There’s something very appealing in the geometric shapes of a neatly ploughed field. This photo was taken near Tiverton, Devon in April 2020 by Lewis Clarke.
Depending on the crops, soil and weather fields will be ploughed any time from just after the autumn harvest right through until spring. Modern farming equipment makes the job far faster and easier, but it’s the same process humans have been doing since the first permanent settlements appeared. Many of the fields being cultivated this spring will have been farmed since the retreat of the glaciers as the last ice age ended.
Spring is often one of the busiest times on farms, with preparation, sowing, and the birth of new animals. If you are out walking in the country at this time be aware of heavy machinery, and keep dogs on leads near livestock.
