About Rippon Tor
Being as it is on the edge of Dartmoor, there is a wonderful vista of high open moorland as Dartmoor stretches inland to the west, and the dramatic drop in elevation towards the east where the sea can be seen. Before accurate mapping techniques became understood, topographers used to believe that Rippon Tor was the second-highest point on Dartmoor, after Cosdon Hill on the North Moor!
A plethora of artefacts can be found within the immediate vicinity of the tor, including three massive prehistoric burial cairns, a probable granite cross set into the ground, two abandoned millstones and one apple crusher. An older name for the tor is Raven Tor so perhaps someone saw a raven occupying the tor at one time?

Dartmoor National Park
Dartmoor is a unique protected landscape in Devon, with rare wildlife and free roaming livestock and ponies. Made up of 954 square kilometres (368 square miles) of open moorland and deep river valleys, the landscape is punctuated by exposed granite tors, providing vital navigation markers and rest stops.
There are plenty of opportunities to explore the wildlife and heritage of the park on foot, by bike, horse or on the water. The long history of Dartmoor can be discovered in ancient Bronze Age burial mounds through to mining landscapes of the medieval and Victorian eras.
